A $1,000 denomination U.S. Treasury Note from 1891 depicting Civil War era General George Gordon Meade, once redeemable in gold and the only known example of the bill outside the Smithsonian Institution, set a world record for any paper money sold when it brought $2.585 million in an event by Heritage Auctions in Schaumburg, Ill. on April 27, 2013. It was part of a trio of rare U.S. Currency that brought more than $6.18 million all together. The last appearance of the bill was in 1944 when it sold for $1,350.
